What if I just want to try the sport to see if I like it?
Come along to the club on a Thursday or Saturday afternoon - the club has a gun you can use.  You will  need to complete a form and provide proof of identity
(a drivers licence is  fine).
Is Clay Target Shooting a safe sport?
 
Yes. Clay Target Shooting is very safe indeed.
Safety rules are rigidly applied.
Is it well regulated and controlled?

 
Yes. Clay Target Shooting is regulated by a national body and controlled by States, Zones and individual Clubs.
Is it recognized internationally?
 
Yes. Practically every country in the world participates in the sport.  It is a major Olympic sport.
How many different types of shooting are there?
We call them shooting disciplines and there are quite a number. Trap, Skeet, Trench, Sporting to name a few. These will become more apparent as you progress in the sport. Competition and practice is available in any or all those disciplines.
How often can I shoot at my club?
 
We usually have one Trap, Skeet & Trench competition each month and the club is available for practise on other days.
I may feel nervous when I first start. Everyone sometimes feel a little apprehensive at the start. We will stand next to you as you shoot and remain until you have your full confidence.
Are there handicaps and grades? Yes. You will always be handicapped and graded according to your ability. Grades are AA, A, B & C. Handicaps are based on measured distances on the shooting marks.
Is coaching available?  Yes. Free coaching is available and also instruction on gun safety and handling.
What sort of equipment do I need?
Well, let’s start with a 12 gauge shotgun which normally is an “Under & Over” type, we recommend that new shooters purchase a secondhand gun in the first instance.  Ear and eye protection are recommended together with a shooting jacket.
Where can I purchase Ammunition?
Ammunition is available from the Club or from different dealers who are normally on the grounds.
Can I reload my own Ammunition? Reloading components and reloading apparatus can be purchased. However, we recommend that you gain some experience with factory ammunition first.
Is reloading difficult? No.  With simple precautions it is easy to reload. There is a lot of technical information available and other shooters are always available to give advice.
What sort of Firearms Licence do I need? Category “A” firearms is all that is necessary.
How do I go about getting that Licence? 'Firstly you must make  application to join the club. You will then be required to undertake the Firearms Safety Course.  Upon the successful completion of this course you will receive a 'Statement of Attainment'.  The Statement of Attainment and evidence of club membership are key documents in obtaining your licence.  Obtain a Firearms Licence Application form from your nearest Police Station, pay the  prescribed fee and lodge the application.  It usually takes several weeks for  your application to be considered by the Police.
What are the costs involved in obtaining the Licence?

Club membership and Australian Clay Target affiliation fees may vary according to your circumstances. The Safety Course fee is $66.  The Weapons Licence Fee amount is presently $80.

Is there a dress code for Clay Target Shooting? Most certainly is. You will require closed shoes, joggers or boots. (no thongs) casual dress but no singlets and no camouflaged apparel of any kind.
What facilities can I expect to find at a Club?  All Clubs provide basic facilities and various forms of refreshment and food facilities.
Will I be able to join members going to other Clubs? Most definitely.   This is one of the most rewarding parts of our sport.  The friendship and social interaction on these occasions is one of the sport’s major highlights.
What is the highest level I could achieve?  Many have reached Olympic standard and have won Gold, Silver, and/or Bronze. Others have become Zone, State, or National champions.  Many achieve a warm satisfaction from competing or just being part of great activity with a fine group of sportsmen.
Am I covered by Insurance? There is a basic Insurance Cover against injury whilst on the grounds.
Can I shoot wildlife at the Club? Absolutely not! It is an offence to shoot at any wildlife on our grounds.  Transgression of that rule carries a penalty of instant dismissal.
